Samsung Galaxy S4 mini live photos

With the Samsung Galaxy S4 now official, it’s time for the rest of the new generation Galaxy devices to start making an appearance. It turns out the first one to break ground is the Galaxy S4 mini.

Galaxy S4 mini S4 mini S4 mini

SamMobile has got hold of some live photos of the smartphone, which reveals a design quite similar to the Samsung Galaxy S4. The photos below confirm that the S4 mini will even feature the back cover design of its bigger brother.

The Galaxy S4 mini (GT-I9190) will be available in a dual-SIM version as well (probably carrying the Galaxy S4 mini duos moniker and GT-I9192 model number).

Despite its name and resemblance to Samsung’s flagship, the Galaxy S4 mini allegedly won’t pack a monster of a CPU, but rather a 1.6GHz dual-core CPU and a 4.3″ Super AMOLED display of qHD resolution (960×540 pixels, 256ppi).

It’s slightly bigger than the ongoing Galaxy S III mini, which features a 4″ display of WVGA resolution. Unfortunately, the S4 mini’s CPU type isn’t known at this point, but what’s known from the photos above is that the smartphone will run what’s currently the latest version of Android -4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

According to the source the Galaxy S4 mini is expected to make its debut in June or July this year.

RUMOR: The next iPhone will likely be a marginal update

Sources from the Apple supply chain are at it again. This time the rumors circulate around the end of May arrival of components, which would point to an arrival of the next iPhone in the the third quarter of this year.

According to said sources the next iPhone will allegedly be a marginal upgrade of the iPhone 5 (perhaps called the iPhone 5S). The next-gen iPhone should come with an improved processor, perhaps a higher-megapixel camera with new module or even a redesigned flash (“Smart Flash”) with white and yellow LEDs in order to improve color reproduction.

The Next iPhone

Foxconn Electronics chairman Terry Guo has noted that he expects company performance to start picking up after April or May, which could coincide with the beginning of the production of the latest iPhone.

According to the sources if the components supply goes smoothly the next-gen iDevice could be delivered to retail channels in 1 to 2 weeks time, which would mean a realistic Q3 launch (Apple needs to gather up stock as the production rate is far lower than initial demand).

Finally reports are mentioning a cheaper, plastic-made iPhone too, but as we are getting the “cheaper iPhone” each year we take those rumors with an extra pinch of salt. Besides, every time the new iPhone comes out last-year’s model gets discounted, technically making it the “cheaper iPhone”.

Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy Tab 3 reportedly coming at IFA 2013

A new report reveals that Samsung could unveil more Galaxy-branded products at IFA 2013 in Berlin, Germany, this September, including the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Tab 3.

The info comes from Sam Mobile, whose insider had access to such details, although he wasn’t able to share any details about the Galaxy Tab 3’s hardware.

The first Galaxy Tab model was also officially unveiled at IFA, back in 2010, while the second-generation tablet versions were announced at MWC 2012. The report also notes that these devices will apparently stop receiving support from Samsung, with the Galaxy Tab 2 set to stop at Android 4.2.2.

The Galaxy Note 3, which recently appeared in another rumor claiming that AT&T execs will have access to a 5.9-inch mockup unit this week, will also be announced at IFA. Even if not confirmed, such a move would make plenty of sense considering that the Galaxy Note and Galaxy Note 2 were also unveiled at the same German trade show, in previous years.

We’ll be back with more Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Tab 3 details in the following months, as more rumors detailing these devices will surely get leaked.

Meizu MX3 is rumored to feature an Exynos 5 Octa processor

Looking for a sexy and unique smartphone without paying a fortune? You might want to forget all the shiny new handsets coming out of Korea, Japan and the United States, and instead turn your attention to China. There are plenty of great brands to be found in China, including Oppo, Xiaomi, Huawei, and Meizu. The later of these is actually preparing for its successor, the Meizu MX3.

We can’t say for sure if the Meizu MX3 will live up to the aesthetically pleasing design seen with the MX2 (pictured above), but its specs certainly will make your mouth water.

The phone is expected to feature a 5.1-inch display with a 1920 x 1200 display and an impressive Exynos 5 Octa processor. Yes, that’s the same processor as you’ll find in theSamsung Galaxy S4. The phone is also believed to have a bezel that is ultra-thin on both sides to make it easier to handle with one hand, similar to what was seen with the recently leaked picture of what is believed to be the Xiaomi MI-3.

Not much else is known about what the next-gen Meizu phone will bring to the table, nor do we have any idea when it will hit or how much it will cost. There is also the possibility that this is nothing more than a rumor. Still, if you are a fan of high-end Chinese handsets, the Meizu MX3 is probably going to be worth keeping an eye out for.

Micromax A116 Canvas HD vs Samsung Galaxy Grand

Micromax Canvas HD A116 vs Samsung Galaxy Grand

Micromax Canvas HD A116 vs Samsung Galaxy Grand

Micromax A116 Canvas HD
There is no doubt that this smartphone will be one of the fastest selling phones in India. If initial reactions of fans is any indication, Micromax has a solid product in its court.

Pros
The A116’s MediaTek MT6589 quad-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz is more than capable of delivering a smooth, lag-free experience. Plus, it runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, which has Project Butter at its core. The PowerVR Series5XT GPU is known to be highly efficient and will handle graphics acceleration duties. Another big point in favour of the Micromax handset is the 5-inch IPS display with 1280 x 720 resolution, which means a pixel density of 294ppi. More importantly, the A116 is touted to be sold for under Rs 15,000, which is a fantastic price for the specs.

Micromax Canvas HD

Micromax Canvas HD

Cons
Looking at the flipside, the Micromax only comes with 4GB onboard storage. Even though it is possible to expand this thanks to the microSD slot, it supports cards only up to 32GB. The front-facing camera of the A116 can shoot only VGA (640 x 480) resolution, when most phones these days have front cams capable of shooting 720p at least. The 2000 mAh battery might not be enough to keep up with the quad-core processor, even though the MediaTek processor uses a 28nm manufacturing process.

Another worry is the lack of past updates by the company. Instead, its standard practice is to release a new handset with the latest OS. Possibly the biggest pain point for Micromax and its customers is the lack of good after-sales service. Despite being an established manufacturer in India, this is one of the biggest complaints by past customers.  And if you are someone who likes unlocking, ROMs and rooting, then this is not the phone for you. There is a very low support on development for MTK devices. There will be no CM or PACman ROMs for this device at all. On the positive side, Micromax Canvas  2 A110 has got its own XDA forum in Legacy and Low activity devies list.
Samsung Galaxy Grand
Samsung has a huge fan following and standing among Android phone makers; however, it is still trying to get right the formula for a smartphone with the right set of features at the right price. With the Galaxy Grand, Samsung is trying to do just that.

Samsung Galaxy Grand

Samsung Galaxy Grand

Pros
Undoubtedly, Samsung’s brand name carries a lot of weight in the smartphone market. Moreover, the company has developed a trustworthy after-sales service network in the country. In this regard, the Korean company is ahead of Micromax. In the Galaxy Grand, it has included some of the TouchWiz features that were launched with the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note II. These include the likes of Smart Call, Pop-up Play, Smart Stay, Smart Alert and S-Voice. Samsung has also included India-specific content offerings called My Services. This includes myMovies, myMusic, myMobileTV, myReader and myEducation.
The Galaxy grand offers 8GB of onboard storage, but unlike the A116, the microSD card slot supports cards up to 64GB. Its front-facing camera is of the 2 megapixel variety, so you can shoot videos with a 720p resolution.

Cons
The biggest complaint about the Samsung handset is the low-resolution display, which tops at 800 x 480, resulting in a low pixel density, 187ppi to be precise. While there is no official word on the processor ticking underneath, one source reports seeing a Galaxy Grand at the Broadcom booth during CES 2013. So one is led to believe that the SoC is the BCM28155, which comprises a pair of ARM Cortex-A9 cores and Broadcom’s own VideoCore-IV graphics engine. This is not the best option out there. Samsung has priced this handset at Rs 21,500, which means the price will be a big factor in making the buying decision. Ideally, the handset’s official price should have been in the Rs 16,000 to 17,000 bracket. It remains to be seen how soon market factors will dictate a fall in price.

The Lumia 620 joins the 920 and the 820 in the Indian market. With the recent budget it was expected that the phone might not hit the sub 15k mark and the pre order price shows. But we can’t wholly trust Flipkart as prices for other pre orders have changed in the past. Anyways, the Lumia 620 is possibly Nokia’s best shot at a mid range winner device, with specs and features rivaling the competition. The specs are –

  • Display: 3.8” TFT WVGA 800×480, ClearBlack
  • Memory: 512MB RAM (8GB internal memory, Micro SD support up to 64GB)
  • Camera: 5Mpix autofocus, LED flash; Video capture: HD 720p@30fps; VGA front camera
